Matt is a litigator who leverages his federal clerkship experience and familiarity with governmental entities, along with his strong communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills, to achieve successful outcomes for clients.
As a member of the firm’s White Collar Defense and Investigations Group, Matt has experience defending clients against federal prosecutions for major fraud, wire fraud, tax fraud, and money laundering. He also has experience defending against investigations and prosecutions brought by state governmental entities, including the Pennsylvania Attorney General.
As a member of the firm’s Litigation Group, Matt has experience with a variety of civil litigation matters, including commercial litigation actions, such as suits alleging tortious interference with contract, breach of contract, and unjust enrichment, toxic tort defense, eminent domain actions, and real estate litigation.
Before joining McNees, Matt clerked for the Honorable Stephen S. Schwartz on the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and then for the Honorable W. Keith Watkins on the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama.
During law school, Matt interned with the Honorable Stephanos Bibas on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and with the General Counsel of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). He was a member of UVA Law’s Appellate Litigation Clinic, litigating before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. And he served as an assistant executive editor for the Journal of Law & Politics, as a symposium editor for the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy, and as a research assistant for Professor Saikrishna Prakash. Before law school, Matt was an oversight and investigations intern with the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance and an intern with the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau.
Matt serves on the board of directors for Hope Within Ministries in Elizabethtown, PA, and is an active member of West Shore Free Church in Mechanicsburg, PA.
Federal fraud defendant: Defended a multi-million-dollar federal major fraud case involving an alleged conspiracy to commit program fraud against the United States.
National talent and sports agency: Settled a high-profile, multi-million-dollar tortious interference case between NFL player agents after multi-year federal litigation.
National corporate client: Assisted with consumer protection investigation brought by Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, including managing responses to consumer complaints and engaging in negotiations to resolve the investigation.
MoneyGram fraud defendant: Defended a large federal wire fraud case, resulting in the client receiving a below-guidelines sentence.
Financial services client: Defended against an action by the Pennsylvania Department of Banking & Securities for violation of the PA Securities Act, resulting in a consent agreement and reduced administrative assessment.
Access device defendant: Defended client charged with illegally possessing an access device, resulting in the district attorney’s office voluntarily dismissing the complaint, and pursued and obtained expungement.
