HARRISBURG, Pa. — (February 23, 2022) McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC is pleased to announce former Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission Senior Assistant Counsel Aspassia (Asya) V. Staevska joins the firm’s nationally ranked Energy and Environmental Law Group.

Staevska leverages 12 years of experience with the Commonwealth’s public utility governing body to advise clients on federal and state electricity matters, focusing on wholesale electricity markets and transmission issues. She is highly knowledgeable in state and federal public utility regulatory proceedings and regional transmission organization processes.

“Asya has more than a decade of experience focused on the interrelationship of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission-jurisdictional issues and retail customer and state-jurisdictional issues,” Bob Weishaar, chair of the McNees Energy and Environmental Law Group, said. “She joins McNees with the ability to make an immediate and positive impact on our ability to represent sophisticated energy clients that are directly affected by that relationship.”

Staevska’s background in public practice is invaluable to clients. She has represented the PUC in FERC proceedings and federal and state appellate courts as well as before the Pennsylvania State House Committee on Environmental Resources and Energy. Staevska also worked in the Office of Chief Counsel at the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

She is a frequent speaker for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute and presents before national regulatory agencies in the U.S. and Europe on utility matters.

“I look forward to assisting the firm’s clients in navigating the state and federal regulatory processes that impact their day-to-day business decisions and future plans,” Staevska said.

The Energy and Environmental Law Group collaborates with clients and other McNees practices, connecting resources from across the firm and its subsidiary companies to solve issues spanning a range of energy and environmental matters. Its team of professionals provide counsel in addressing the business, regulatory and legal needs of the energy industry, nimbly navigating the ever-changing legal and regulatory landscape’s effect on the marketplace.

Outside of advising clients on how policy changes may impact business, the group’s members regularly practice before commissions; handle compliance and enforcement matters; negotiate project and rate contracts; develop on-site generation plans, including renewable energy options; and litigate environmental law and toxic tort cases.
