Esports Gambling to be Discussed at McNees, Harrisburg University and Whitaker Center Esports Seminar

HARRISBURG, Pa. – (August 8, 2018) McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC, Harrisburg University and Whitaker Center Esports Seminar will cover the possibility of esports betting in Pennsylvania given the recent U.S. Supreme Court case legalizing sports gambling.  The event is scheduled for September 7, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m at Whitaker Center in Harrisburg.

The esports gambling panel will consist of Doug Sherman of the PA Gaming Control Board, Bill Thomas of the PA Esports Coalition, as well as McNees attorneys specialized in the topic.  These individuals will discuss the implications of esports betting in the Commonwealth, how it would work and whether it has the potential to impact state revenues. The panel will also discuss some of the concerns regarding the illegal esports betting market, including underage and compulsive gambling, and if these elements carry over in a regulated and legal esports betting industry.

Doug Sherman serves as the Chief Counsel for the PA Gaming Control Board, where he counsels and oversees a staff of attorneys in the provision of all legal advice and services to the Board, the Executive Director, and various administrative bureaus and units of the agency.  Prior to this role, Sherman was the Deputy Chief Counsel for Litigation for the Gaming Control Board and held various positions with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General’s Civil Litigation Section, including Senior Deputy Attorney General.

Bill Thomas is Chairman of the Pennsylvania Esports Coalition, a non-profit 501(c)(6) organization created to advance the development, growth and integrity of esports in Pennsylvania through advocacy, education and promotion of the industry.  The Coalition is comprised of stakeholders from all aspects of the esports industry, including technology, entertainment, education, athletic, casino gaming and government sectors.  Thomas is a government affairs and political consulting professional with nearly two decades of experience influencing public policy and developing business opportunities, with a focus on gaming industries.

The seminar, led by the McNees Esports Practice Group, will also cover the legitimacy of esports, its role in higher education, team ownership, and investment & sponsorship opportunities.

Registration for the Esports Seminar costs $99.  On-site registration and continental breakfast will be from 8:15 a.m. to 9 a.m.  Lunch will be sponsored by the Pennsylvania Esports Coalition.
