David J. Freed practices in the McNees Litigation and White Collar Defense and Internal Investigations Practice Groups. David spent more than 23 years in public service and has focused his career on anticipating problems, understanding needs and finding solutions.
From November 2017 to January 2021, David served as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. As United States Attorney, David supervised all operations of the office, both civil and criminal. On the civil side, he led a reorganization of the division that created the Affirmative Civil Enforcement unit. On the criminal side, David focused significant energy on working together with local partners in target areas of the district to bring investigative and prosecution resources to areas of greatest need.
Earlier in his career, David was the Cumberland County District Attorney for 12 years. He served in First Assistant District Attorney and Assistant District Attorney roles in Cumberland County and spent a year as a deputy prosecutor in York County. In those roles, David tried more than 135 cases to verdict, including 12 Civil Trials, was involved in the investigation and prosecution of more than 50 homicide cases and prosecuted complex drug cases, arson and violent felonies, including sexual assaults. He started his career as a law clerk for Judge Harold Sheely of the Cumberland County Court of Common Pleas.
David has implemented and taught more than 50 CLE courses for PDAA, the National College of District Attorneys, PBI, Dickinson School of Law, Widener University Commonwealth School of Law, the Cumberland County Bar Association, the PA Legal Aid Network, the PA Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and the Pennsylvania State Conference of Trial Judges.
David earned his law degree from Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle and his bachelor’s degree from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.
