HARRISBURG, Pa. – (September 23, 2021) McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC received MidPenn Legal Services’ Law Firm Award in recognition of its many decades of support for the nonprofit law firm and its mission at a virtual ceremony on September 22, 2021.

McNees’ continuing pro bono and financial support for MidPenn Legal Services’ mission, clients and advocates, has made a difference in the lives of many low-income citizens. MidPenn is a nonprofit law firm that provides free civil legal services to residents of 18 counties in central Pennsylvania.

“McNees has earned the recognition of a champion of justice for all.  McNees’ attorneys and staff have donated countless hours to support MidPenn’s mission,” said Nick Matash, the managing attorney of MidPenn’s Harrisburg office. “However, it is not merely the act of volunteering that is commendable. It is also the devotion to seeing projects through to completion and the spirit with which staff approach undertakings. It is inspiring.”

In particular, McNees’ Jim DeAngelo, commercial litigation attorney and the firm’s associate general counsel, was acknowledged for his tireless commitment to serving Pennsylvanians who cannot afford legal counsel. He has a deep passion for pro bono work — he is the President-Elect of MidPenn’s Board of Directors.  He has served as chair of the Dauphin County Bar Association’s Public Service Committee since 1997, as well as a leader of the Community Justice Project and Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network. In 2017, he received MidPenn’s Pro Bono of the Year Award.

“At McNees, we believe that we are a helping profession.  We strive to help as many people as possible through our pro bono efforts and know that partnering with the skilled professionals at MidPenn allows us to make a greater impact in our community,” said McNees Member Jim DeAngelo.  “We are flattered by this recognition and look forward to many more years of collaborating with MidPenn Legal Services.”

The Access to Justice ceremony was an opportunity for the Commonwealth’s legal community to highlight and elevate promising practices as well as call for equal access to justice. Honored at the celebration were members of the legal profession who support MidPenn’s mission of providing high-quality civil legal services for low-income residents and those who have made significant contributions toward achieving Equal Justice for all members of its community.

More than ever, Americans with limited financial means confront their civil legal issues without the aid of an attorney. Close to 90 percent of the civil legal problems reported by low-income Americans receive inadequate to no legal assistance, according to MidPenn Legal Services. During its 2020-2021 fiscal year, its partners in the legal community helped 15,222 people through 9,852 cases.
